How do I share an Inhouse chat thread with someone else?
Add people by email, see who has access, and remove access at any time.
You can share a conversation with specific people by clicking the Share feature and sending it to their email addresses. Only the people you add can open it, and you can remove anyone at any time.
How sharing works
- You share with people, not with a link. Each person you add has to sign in to Inhouse with their email address (the one you provided when you shared the chat thread). Anyone else who tried to open the link sees nothing.
- People you add will see the whole chat thread conversation. That includes everything said before you shared it and everything said afterwards. They read it live.
- Access to the shared chat thread doesn't expire. It lasts until you remove the person.
- The link doesn't change. Each Inhouse conversation has one link. Sharing it again or adding more people doesn't create a new one.
- Shared conversations don't appear in search engines. Google and other search engines can't find or show them.
How to share a conversation
- Open the conversation and select Share.
- Enter the person's email address and select Add.
- Repeat for anyone else you want to add.
Each person you add gets an email from Inhouse saying you've shared a conversation with them. The email includes a button that when clicked, will prompt them to either sign into their Inhouse account if they aren't logged in, or will prompt them to create a free account in order to view the shared conversation.
Sharing with someone who doesn't have an Inhouse account
You can add anyone's email address, even if they don't have an account yet. They'll show on your list as Invited until they sign up.
Once they sign up with the address you entered, they go straight to the conversation. They don't need to accept anything.
One note: they have to sign up with the exact email address you added. An account made with a different email address won't be able to open the conversation.
See who has access
Open the conversation and select Share. You'll see a list of everyone who has access, including people who've been invited but haven't signed up yet.
Remove someone's access
- Open the conversation and select Share.
- Select Remove next to the person.
They lose access immediately, even if they have the conversation open. If they try to open it again, they're told they no longer have access and should ask you.
Share with anyone who has the link (Free and AI-Associate plans only)
On the Free and AI-Associate plans, you can also let anyone with the link read the conversation, with no sign-in needed.
- Open the conversation and select Share.
- Under Who can open it, choose Anyone with the link.
- Copy the link and send it.
Keep in mind:
- Anyone who has the link can read the conversation and pass the link on. That includes anything you say in the conversation afterwards.
- Search engines won't be able to find or crawl your shared Inhouse conversation.
- To switch back to sharing with specific people, you'll be asked to add at least one person first.
On the Inhouse Counsel plan, conversations can only be shared with people you add by email. Anyone-with-the-link sharing isn't offered because of the privilege feature.
Upgrading to Inhouse Counsel
When you upgrade to Inhouse Counsel, every "anyone-with-the-link" share on your account stops working. People who open one of those links are told the conversation isn't shared publicly any more. To give someone access again, you'll need to add them by email.
Consultations
Requesting a consultation doesn't share or publish your conversation. Your assigned Inhouse lawyer can read it through their Inhouse account. If you want a lawyer outside Inhouse to see it, add them by email like anyone else.
Common alerts you may see if you can't open a shared conversation that you've been sent
"This link went to another address"
You're signed in with a different email than the one the conversation was shared with. Sign out, then sign in with the address the invitation email was sent to.
"You don't have access any more"
The owner removed you. Ask the person who shared it to add you again.
"This conversation isn't shared publicly any more"
It used to be open to anyone with the link, but that's been turned off. Ask the owner to add your email.
"This conversation isn't available"
You don't have access to the chat thread. Check that you're using the link from your invitation email and are signed in with that address. If it still doesn't open, ask the person who shared it.
You're asked to sign in or sign up
You're not signed in. Sign in, or sign up with the address the invitation was sent to, and you'll go straight to the conversation.
