How many documents can I upload to a chat?
Understand your document upload limits and what to do when you reach them.
The number of documents you can upload depends on your Inhouse membership.
AI-Associate and Inhouse Counsel
AI-Associate and Inhouse Counsel members can upload up to 30 documents per chat thread.
The 30-document limit applies to each individual thread. It does not reset over time or at the beginning of a new month.
If you reach 30 documents in one thread, simply start a new chat thread to upload more. Paid members can create unlimited chat threads, and each new thread allows up to 30 document uploads.
For example:
- Chat #1 → up to 30 documents
- Chat #2 → up to 30 more documents
- Chat #3 → up to 30 more documents
Upload limits do not reset.
Why is there a 30-document limit per chat?
The limit helps Inhouse maintain the quality of your conversation.
As more documents and information are added to a single thread, there is more context for the AI to keep track of. Starting a new thread after 30 documents helps keep your legal work focused and allows Inhouse to work more effectively with the documents you've provided.
What happens when I reach 30 documents?
If you've reached the upload limit in your current thread, start a new chat to continue uploading documents.
You do not need to upgrade your membership to be able to add more documents in a new chat thread. AI-Associate and Inhouse Counsel members have unlimited chat threads.
Inhouse should also prompt you to start a new thread when you've reached the 30-document limit.
How do I continue my work in a new chat?
If hit the upload limit and need to add additional uploads, you can bring the important context from your current chat into the new one.
Before starting a new thread, ask Inhouse to create a summary for you. You can use this prompt:
“I need to continue this work in a new chat. Please create a detailed summary I can copy into the new thread. Include the important facts, what we're working on, decisions we've made, key information from the documents we've reviewed, and what still needs to be done.”
Then:
- Copy the summary.
- Start a new chat.
- Paste the summary into your first message.
- Upload the documents you want Inhouse to work with in the new thread.
- Tell Inhouse what you'd like to do next.
You don't need to copy every message from your old conversation. The summary gives the new chat the important context it needs to continue your work.
If you need Inhouse to review or reference a specific document in the new thread, upload that document again. The summary helps carry over the context, but it does not replace the actual document.
Free members
Free members can upload up to 10 documents per chat thread.
If you need higher document upload limits, you can upgrade to a paid Inhouse membership.
